Phew! Just finished a set of blood angels and now they're ready to be sent back home for the client. This commission took me pretty long time, and it delayed time after time, but my client was very supportive and I thank him for the patience. The painting itself didn't take too many hours, but I had problems with scheduling my actual work and commissions jobs.
But, now were here and it's time to dig out the next commission army...
I made a battle worn look to the armor - even it's plain red, it's pretty organic looking overall. By using acrylic inks I got this funny effect. Acrylic inks stick quite badly over white basecoat, and it can be rubbed away with another paint. This time I used clear orange to rub the acrylic ink away.. So the whiter/lighter parts of the armor is rubbed clear orange ;)
Red is always pain in arse but these look great! Your method sounds intresting like a hairspray method that scale modellers use?!
ReplyDeleteYep, I also scratch paint away during the layers. Acrylic inks have great tone, but when you slap tamiya paints or W&B inks over them, they can easily be scratched off with your brush revealing the white basecoat.
ReplyDeleteA very interesting and effective look – reminds me of the slight craquelure effect on a few of the Blood Angels artworks in the Rogue Trader rulebook. Could you explain the technique a little more? Is the ink applied directly over white undercoat and then overlaid with acrylic paint, or are there additional steps?
ReplyDeleteHi Apologist and my apologies for the delayed answer!
DeleteYes, acrylic ink is poured right over the white basecoat. These acrylic inks are milk-like acrylic paints, and they don't stick too well to flat surfaces. I guess this is the reason why I can rub the excess off with alcohol-based paint (tamiya clear).
